On May, 3rd,4th and 5th, 2012 will take place the First Edition of the Deaf Film Festival of Rome “CINEDEAF” at the “Nuovo Cinema Aquila” movie theatre in Rome.
Produced by the Public Institute for the Deaf of Rome (Istituto Statale per Sordi di Roma – ISSR) with the contribution of the Provincia di Roma and the support of the Italian National Association of the Deaf (Ente Nazionale Sordi – ENS), the festival intends to showcase Deaf Cinema, highlighting emerging issues of the Deaf Community, both local and international.
It will be a showcase for films by deaf directors in Italy in the wake of other international festivals. This venture could become a biennial event to create opportunities for both the Deaf and the Hearing communities to come together and raise public awareness of deaf people’s needs.
Furthermore the festival aims to highlight different perspectives and experiences, thanks to international films, to encourage the potential of young deaf people in the construction of positive identities and to promote increased accessibility for deaf people to enjoy cinema.
Beyond the basic filming program, there will also be seminars, presentations and workshops during the festival.
This year the festival opens with three contest sections and a non-competitive section:
CONTEST
In this section will be screened films in competition at the First Edition of Cinedeaf. The two categories of the contest are: ‘Documentaries’ and ‘Short films’; for each category will be awarded the ‘Best Deaf Director’ and the ‘Best Hearing Director’. There will be also a category dedicated to’Schools’ (not in competition) with the aim of showcase projects carried out by Institutes.
MONDO DEAF
In this section will be screened international films realized by deaf directors and hearing directors’ films that deepen Deaf world knowledge.
CINEDEAF EVENTS
In this section will be possible to assist to special screening and premiere of recent works.
WORKSHOP
This is the section dedicated to Cinedeaf guests who will realize seminaries and performances interacting with the public.

Deaf Directors
The “Deaf Directors” category is dedicated to Italian and foreign deaf directors, from the age of 18 years old.
Debut works will be accepted. Productions may use Italian Sign Language, Italian, other sign languages or vocal languages. For foreign productions, Italian or English subtitles are requested. It is possible to propose works of different length and genre (films, documentaries, fiction, short films, etc.)
Hearing Directors
“Hearing Directors” category is dedicated to Italian and foreign hearing directors, from the age of 18 years old, dealing with deafness, deaf culture or Sign Languages. For foreign productions, Italian or English subtitles are requested.
It is possible to propose works of different length and genre (films, documentaries, fiction, short films, etc.)
Schools
This category intends to reward deaf and hearing students’ creativity, stimulating integration by means of group work and also promoting the use of visual media for self-expression or to demonstrate their difficulties. In this section, works realized by deaf high school students in cooperation with their class, working in small groups or by themselves will be accepted. The supervision of a teacher, responsible for films’ registration, is mandatory.

Il 3 – 4 – 5 maggio 2012 presso il Nuovo Cinema Aquila si terrà la 1ª edizione del CINEDEAF, primo Festival del Cinema Sordo di Roma.
Ideato e prodotto dall’Istituto Statale per Sordi di Roma e realizzato grazie al contributo della Provincia di Roma nell’ambito del bando “Provincia a tutto tondo”, il Festival nasce con l’obiettivo di dare visibilità a opere video di registi sordi nazionali e internazionali e a produzioni che abbiano come tematica centrale la sordità, la cultura Sorda e la Lingua dei Segni.
La partecipazione al concorso e l’adesione al Festival sono state significative, sono infatti pervenute 150 opere tra le quali ne sono state selezionate 19 per la sezione competitiva e altre che andranno a comporre l’intero programma di questa tre giorni dedicata al Deaf Cinema.
Il programma del Festival sarà articolato in 4 sezioni :
CONCORSO
Sezione competitiva durante la quale saranno proiettati documentari e cortometraggi di registi sordi, registi udenti e di giovani videomaker delle scuole superiori che hanno partecipato al Contest lanciato da CINEDEAF.
Sabato 5 maggio, in chiusura del Festival, le opere più meritevoli verrannno premiate dalla giuria composta da Raffaele Cagnazzo, Massimiliano Giovannardi ed Elisabetta Pandimiglio.
CINEDEAF EVENTI
Sezione speciale durante la quale saranno presentati in anteprima italiana film e documentari vincitori di diversi Festival internazionali di Cinema e Deaf Cinema.
Tra gli altri segnaliamo il film di Oren Kaplan THE HAMMER (giovedi 3 maggio ore 20.30) che racconta la storia vera della crescita personale e professionale del fenomenale pugile sordo Matt Hamill, e il documentario di Hilari Scarl SEE WHAT I’M SAYING (venerdì 4 maggio ore 20.30) che segue le vicende di 4 noti artisti sordi che decidono di confrontarsi con il pubblico tradizionale dell’industria culturale e dell’intrattenimento.
Sabato 5 maggio alle ore 20.30, sempre nell’ambito della sezione CINEDEAF EVENTI, sarà inoltre presentato, in anteprima romana, il film SONO RIMASTO SENZA PAROLE di Elisabetta Sgarbi.
Per l’occasione saranno presenti in sala per incontrare il pubblico insieme alla regista, i due protagonisti del film: lo scrittore Pino Roveredo, premio Campiello 2005, e il Maestro Antonio Stagnoli.
MONDO DEAF
Sezione pensata per dare al pubblico del Festival una panoramica sul mondo dei sordi e sulla lingua dei Segni e dedicata alla proiezione di diverse opere internazionali fra le quali i cortometraggi A MILLION POUND DON’T COME FOR FREE e NOT FROM WHERE I’M STANDING, che raccontano con ironia il rapporto fra sordi e udenti, e il documentario L’ENFANCE SOURDE che segue la storia di due bambini udenti figli di genitori sordi e dei loro rapporti familiari.
In chiusura di Festival, sabato 5 maggio alle ore 22.30, sarà presentato, per la sezione Mondo Deaf – Visioni Queer, AUSTIN UNBOUND il primo documentario su un trans sordo.
WORKSHOP
Spazio dedicato a seminari e performance. Il foyer del Nuovo cinema Aquila ospiterà giovedì 3 maggio alle ore 16.30 il workshop “Come nasce un corto?” condotto dal regista e producer sordo Daniele Le Rose, mentre sabato 5 maggio alle ore 17.00 l’artista sorda americana Christine Sun Kim con l’aiuto di subwoofer e colori si esibirà in una performance sperimentale in cui il suono sarà trasformato in vere e proprie opere di arte visiva.
Per entrare nella vera atmosfera CINEDEAF, lo Staff del Festival invita tutti gli interessati a partecipare mercoledì 2 maggio alle ore 19:00 presso la libreria-Caffè Lo Yeti (Mappa) all’aperitivo di inaugurazione del Festival.
