EMUfest 2012

The conservatoire of Rome with the fifth edition of its “International Electroacoustic Music Festival of the Conservatorio S. Cecilia” intends to renovate this unique event in the Italian panorama, where audiences will have the opportunity to listen to the most representative international electroacoustic musical production. An event which will take place in October in Rome’s historical city centre, listening to today’s music also reflecting about it: its techniques, its instruments, its expressive objectives and its relationship with other arts and disciplines.
During the eleven days, concerts, conferences, workshops, seminars and special events will take place in many different locations. During the first part 16 concerts are on the programme: two per Festival day – one in the afternoon af 5.30 PM and the second one in the evening at 8.30 PM. The concerts will all take place in the Sala Accademica of the Conservatorio S. Cecilia, equipped with a high-quality optophonic audio system. During the second part of the festival there will be other two concerts, the first one, open-air, in the University campus at 3.30 PM, the second one at 5.30 PM at the “Ennio Morricone” Auditorium – Faculty of Arts, which features a high-quality quadriphonic audio system.
The concerts of the Fifth edition of EMUfest are strongly focused on the relationship between acoustic instruments and electronics. In fact, most of the conservatoire departments participate to the Festival with students and teachers. There will be concerts with  flute, guitar, piano, percussions, voice and ensembles of various dimensions. Of course as a counterpoint to instrumental pieces the festival will also offer audio-visual and acousmatic works, this time trying to perform them in different contexts such as free open-air listening and during “concert-lessons”: these will take especially at the University “Tor Vergata”.

During this fifth edition of the festival the following special events will take place:

• A performance-event dedicated to John Cage: Musicircus on the occasion of the opening day of the Festival,  a message of integration between musical cultures featuring a collaboration with Baobab Multicultural Center where just about all the conservatoire staff will participate.
• A concert-event dedicated to the 80th birthday of Roman musician Mario Bertoncini who will perform his own works and music by John Cage.
• Two events dedicated to the situation of electroacoustic music in the American continent: USA (North-West side), Latin America and Argentina, on 11th and 12th Ocrtober, at the Conservatorio, the Casa Argentina and the Italo Latin American Institute (IILA).
• An event dedicated to “visual music” in Germany on 11th October at the Conservatorio.
• The second edition of the workshop on Music and Architecture on  9th October at the faculty of Architecture of Università “La Sapienza” di Roma.
• The first edition of the workshop on Music and Physics on 13th October at the Conservatorio S. Cecilia in collaboration with the INFN of Frascati.
• A seminar on the theme Cage and Scelsi: two inter cultural approaches to the future of music on 12th October at the Isabella Scelsi Foundation.
• The presentation of the project Music and Architecture at the Accademia di S. Luca on the morning of October 12th.
• EMUmeeting: fourth edition of the meeting for all Intalian conservatoire courses of electronic music taking place on 8th October at the Conservatorio.
• A round table on the theme “the future of electroacoustic music” will be held on 14th October in the morning at the Conservatorio.
• Teachers-composers of the conservatoire will present a concert with five works among which three in world première.

All the events will be possible thanks to support from the British Concil, the Isabella Scelsi Foundation, the Accademia di S. Luca, the Faculty of Architecture of the Università “La Sapienza” di Roma, IILA (Italo Latin American Institute), Casa Argantina, INFN Frascati, Master in “Sonic Arts” of “Tor Vergata” University – Rome.
Again, this year, the collaboration of CEMAT has been fundamental for the programming of the Festival, of which it is an integral part, for the fourth time.

Nel corso delle 11 giornate previste si terranno, in luoghi diversi, concerti, conferenze, convegni ed eventi speciali. Nella prima parte i concerti saranno 16, due per ogni giornata del festival, il primo nel pomeriggio alle 17,30 il secondo la sera alle 20,30. I concerti avranno luogo tutti presso la Sala Accademica del Conservatorio di S.Cecilia, dotata di un sistema di ascolto ottofonico di altissima qualità. Nella seconda parte i concerti saranno ancora due al giorno, il primo all’aperto nel campus universitario alle 15,30 e il secondo alle 17,30 presso l’Auditorium “Ennio Morricone” della facoltà di Lettere, dotato di un sistema di ascolto quadrifonico di ottima qualità.

I concerti della 5^a edizione di EMUfest sono fortemente incentrati sul rapporto fra strumenti acustici ed elettronica. La maggior parte dei dipartimenti del Conservatorio partecipa con i suoi docenti e studenti. Vi saranno concerti dedicati all’elettronica con la viola, il flauto, la chitarra, il pianoforte, le percussioni, la voce oltre che con ensemble di varia dimensione. I lavori audio-visuali ed acusmatici contrappunteranno come sempre quelli strumentali, ma, oltre a questo, si cercherà di eseguirli in contesti meno legati al concerto tradizionale, come l’ascolto libero all’aperto e la “lezione concerto”. Questo, in particolare, presso l’Università di Roma “Tor Vergata”.

In questa 5^a edizione del festival, gli eventi speciali saranno così articolati:

• Una esecuzione-evento dedicata a John Cage: musiCyrcus in occasione della prima giornata del festival, un messaggio d’integrazione fra le diverse culture musicali in collaborazione con l’associazione Baobab a cui parteciperanno pressochè tutti i dipartimenti del Conservatorio.

• Una Serie di tre eventi dedicati allo strumento e l’elettronica il 7,10,13 e 14 ottobre: chitarra, archi, saxofono e pianoforte.Un concerto-evento dedicato agli 80 anni del musicista romano Mario Bertoncini che eseguirà musiche proprie e di John Cage.

• Due eventi dedicati alla situazione della musica elettroacustica nel continente Americano: USA (North-West side), Latino-America e Argentina, l’11 e 12 ottobre presso il Conservatorio, la Casa Argentina e l’Istituto Italo Latino Americano (IILA).

• Un evento dedicato alla “musica visuale” in Germania l’11 ottobre al Conservatorio.

• La seconda edizione del convegno sul tema Musica e Architettura il 9 ottobre presso la facoltà di Architettura dell’Università “La Sapienza” di Roma.

• La prima edizione del convegno sul tema Musica e Fisica il 13 ottobre presso il Conservatorio S.Cecilia in collaborazione con l’INFN di Frascati.

• Un convegno sul tema Cage e Scelsi: due approcci interculturali per il futuro della musica il 12 ottobre Presso la Fondazione Isabella Scelsi.

• La presentazione del progetto Musica e Architettura presso l’Accademia di S.Luca il 12 ottobre al mattino.

• EMUmeeting: la quarta edizione dell’incontro fra i corsi di Musica Elettronica dei Conservatori italiani a Roma si svolgerà l’8 ottobre presso il Conservatorio.

• Un incontro sul tema “il futuro della musica elettroacustica” si terrà il 14 ottobre al mattino presso il Conservatorio.

• I compositori docenti del conservatorio presenteranno un concerto con 5 lavori di cui tre in prima esecuzione assoluta.

È stato possibile programmare tali eventi grazie alla collaborazione con il British Council, la Fondazione Isabella Scelsi, l’Accademia di San Luca, la facoltà di Architettura dell’Università “La Sapienza” di Roma, l’IILA (Istituto Italo Latino Americano), l’Ambasciata e la Casa Argentina, l’INFN di Frascati, il Master in “Sonic Arts” dell’Università di Roma “Tor Vergata” e il Göthe Institute Rome.

La collaborazione con il CEMAT è stata anche quest’anno organica alla programmazione del festival di cui sarà parte integrante, per la quarta volta.
